
This is
the drinking Well at the foot of
The
Slopes opened in March 1783 this stood in a similar position
as the later Well above. it was designed by John Carr who also
designd
The Crescent, the Urn
shown on top was removed when the Well was demolished and now
features on the front of The Devonshire Royal Campus. Both this
Well and it's predecesser The Delves Well 1709 - 1780 which was
demolished to make way for The construction of
The
Crescent, were served by attendents who's job it was to keep
the Well clean and dispense the water, although through some times
in History the attendants were appointed on an annual basis, it
seems at least two ladies Martha Brandreth who's Gravestone in
Fairfield Church states she served at the Buxton Well for 50 years
and the Famous Martha Norton who it also claimed served at the
Well for 50 years and was still living aged 86 years it was claimed
